Position Details

General Statement

The MSU Department of Native American Studies maintains a pool of non-tenure-track applicants for consideration as potential instructors in Native American Studies courses.

Duties and Responsibilities

Generally, instructors teach introductory-level courses in Native American Studies. Occasionally, instructors teach upper-division courses in the same field. Courses available vary from one semester to the next, depending on need and funding.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. A master’s degree in Native American Studies or closely-related field.

2. Experience teaching at the college or university level.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Experience teaching Native American studies courses at the college or university level.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

This position MAY BE a Union position. Union membership is determined by the amount of work being contracted.

Any position working 50% or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment. Additional information can be found at AFMSU.org.

Any position working less than 50% is not represented by the Union, and is not required to pay dues. If the terms and conditions of the hire contracts change, the representational status of this position could be impacted.

The Program
The Department

The Department of Native American Studies is in the College of Letters and Science. It is the only Indigenous Studies/Native American Studies program in a mainstream institution accredited by the World’s Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium. The Katz Family Endowed Chair in Native American Studies is one of only three such chairs in the United States.
The Department offers a non-teaching undergraduate minor in Native American Studies (NAS), a graduate certificate in NAS and a Masters of Arts in NAS. Courses in Native American Studies are an integral part of the Diversity Category in the University Core requirements.
