Position Details

General Statement

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in the pool for two years. After two years, candidates need to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non tenure track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration—a couple of weeks, a semester, or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on the number of courses taught and duration.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

  • Teaching on campus or online courses;
  • Advising, evaluating, and assisting students; and/or,
  • Curriculum and/or course development.

The Department seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor or Instructor qualified to teach one or more of the following courses in Psychology in Fall semester 2015 and/or Spring semester 2016, depending on available funding: Research Design and Analysis I, Research Design and Analysis II, Abnormal Psychology, Psychology of Gender, Social Psychology, Psychology of Personality, Judgment and Decision Making, Consciousness, History and Systems, Contemporary Issues in Human Sexuality, Psychology of Learning, Behavior Modification, Psychology of Prejudice, Drugs and Behavior, and Senior Thesis/Capstone.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

PhD or MA/MS/ABD in Psychology or closely allied field.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. PhD in Psychology.
  2. College-level teaching experience in a face-to-face lecture format.
  3. Academic background commensurate with teaching one or more of the courses listed above.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

This position MAY BE a Union position. Union membership is determined by the amount of work being contracted.

Any position working 50% or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment. Additional information can be found at AFMSU.org.

Any position working less than 50% is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues. If the terms and conditions of the hire contracts change, the representational status of this position could be impacted.

The Program
The Department

The Psychology Department has 10 tenure/tenure-track faculty, several non-tenure track faculty, and approximately 400 students. Class sizes typically range from 25-75 students.

The Department teaches with an emphasis on psychological science and offers a BS in Psychology, an MS in Psychological Science, and provides excellent undergraduate learning experiences to majors, minors, and the broader university.

The College

The College of Letters and Science (L&S), the largest center for learning, teaching and research at Montana State University, offers students an excellent liberal arts and sciences education in nearly 50 majors, 25 minors and over 25 graduate degrees within the four areas of the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics and social sciences.
