Position Details

General Statement

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is responsible for managing all departmental fiscal affairs; promoting and integrating productive working relationships among the department faculty and staff; promoting the department within the college, university, state and nation; and planning and developing long-term departmental programs in collaboration with the faculty and stakeholders. This person will be responsible for annual faculty performance reviews; guiding new departmental hires; and communicating on behalf of the department with the academic community, state and federal agencies, private industry, agricultural organizations, and the general public. Administrative responsibilities include oversight of several large service labs. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to maintain an active research program and participate in the instructional and extension programs of the department. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Earned doctorate in a Plant Sciences discipline or significant relative experience in the field of plant sciences.
  2. Academic qualifications necessary for initial appointment as associate or full professor.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Administrative experience in program development, leadership, and research facilities fiscal and personnel management.
  2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and/or extension.
  3. Established nationally competitive research program.
  4. Consistent record of extramural funding.
  5. Commitment to the land grant philosophy and/or previous experience at a land grant institution.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work with and engage diverse students, staff, and colleagues within and outside the department and a commitment to the principles of inclusiveness and diversity.
The Successful Candidate Will
  • Have a well-defined vision for successfully leading a department in a land grant university.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities.

The Program
The Department

The Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology has 29 tenure track faculty, with major emphases on plant genetics and plant pathology and includes plant breeders, plant physiologists, horticulturists, cereal chemists, entomologists, and plant molecular biologists. Research conducted in the Department is highly collaborative among departmental faculty and beyond. The Department and University have state-of-the-art facilities in addition to excellent plant growth facilities. Field research facilities are available both near campus and at seven Research Centers located strategically throughout the state. The Department offers both MS and PhD degrees in Plant Pathology and Plant Science.
