Position Details

General Statement

The CBME is searching for two part-time Instructional Coaches to ensure the classroom implementation of learned practices through regular review of video-taped class interactions and provide feedback to participant teachers. In addition to teacher-student interactions, participant teachers will receive feedback from the Instructional Coaches on their adherence to best practices and sound instructional strategies working with ELLs. Each Instructional Coach will undergo My Teaching Partner–Secondary (MTP-S) training as well as training in the evaluation of classroom teacher-student interaction using the CLASS-S observation instrument and training in the evaluation of ELL instruction using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) lesson plan checklist.

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non tenurable level instruction and/or related functions.

Applications will be accepted on a continual basis and will be maintained in pool for two years.

After two years, candidates need to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department hiring authority will review and evaluate the application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure-track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works autonomously to ensure the comprehension of and implementation of MTP-S best practices by classroom teachers through:
    • regular review of video-taped classroom interactions
    • provision of feedback to participant teachers concerning:
      • teacher-student interactions,
      • adherence to best practices and sound instructional strategies working with ELLs.
  • During the second half of the first year, engage in MTP-S training and gain training in the evaluation of classroom teacher-student interaction using the CLASS-S observation instrument as well as training in the evaluation of ELL instruction using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) lesson plan checklist.
  • In collaboration with project directors, collect baseline data using these instruments during classroom observations either in person or via video.
  • During years 2, 3, and 4, coaches will work with the participating teachers in Cohorts 1, 2, and 3 respectively to have them record a class period every two weeks. The teachers will record their lessons and interactions with their students. After each cohort’s first year, teachers will be recording their lessons and interactions with students once a semester.
  • Work with the teachers face-to-face and through videos to provide formative feedback:
    • Review each video; edit several clips from the video to highlight strengths and challenges of the instruction and teacher-student interactions; then provide formative feedback using these clips with the participating teacher via phone or video-conferencing.
    • After a year of biweekly feedback, the Instructional Coaches will provide semi-annual feedback to each participant throughout the duration of the grant.
  • Provide classroom observations used in pre-test, post-test, and follow-up evaluations.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Three years experience as certified teacher teaching ELL students or as teacher educator preparing teachers to work with ELLs
  2. Proficiency in sheltered instruction methods

  1. Masters degree or terminal degree in Education.
  2. Experience working with American Indian students.
  3. Commitment to student, faculty, and staff diversity.

  • Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers, i.e. co-workers, program partners, students, education leaders, and the general public.
  • Demonstrate skill organizing and prioritizing large volumes of work with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality, paying close attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changing priorities while maintaining a positive and professional approach.

This position MAY BE a Union position. Union membership is determined by the amount of work being contracted.

Any position working 50% or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment. The Center for Bilingual and Multicultural Education has been revitalized to support the Montana State University community and tribal nations across Montana by generating multiple funding streams focusing on the following program areas: “best practices” in the revitalization and maintenance of Indigenous languages, facilitation of culturally responsive pedagogy in k-12 schools including the integration of Indian Education for All across the curriculum in all content areas and at all levels, as well as a variety of projects designed to promote social justice by increasing cultural sensitivity.
