Position Details

General Statement

The “Golden Triangle” is one of the most productive grain growing areas of the United States. The mission of WTARC is to support agricultural production in this area through research on pest insects and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for their management, through precision nutrient management and providing testing for various crop varieties currently in development. The development of novel cost, effective strategies for mitigating destructive pest insects is a primary goal of the station. The successful applicant will perform duties in regards to IPM.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support the entomology/insect ecology program at WTARC under the direct supervision of the Entomologist/Ecologist. This individual will assist in seeding, harvesting, designing field and greenhouse/laboratory studies pertaining to insect-plant interactions, collection and management of data, conducting statistical analysis and summarizing results for scientific presentations and publications in peer reviewed journals. In addition, the incumbent will also assist in writing grant proposals.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. M.S. degree in Entomology, Nematology, or Biology;
2. Field research experience in agronomic crops including: experimental design, field plot layout, establishment and precision seeding; plot maintenance including fertilization and pest management; precision harvesting of experimental plots, and procedures and practices associated with grain cleaning and processing;
3. Experience in collecting and managing data and conducting statistical analyses;
4. Experience in writing publications for peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Ph.D. degree in Entomology, Nematology, or Biology;
2. Research experience relating to integrated pest management and cultivar evaluation/plant breeding;
3. Experience in the operation and maintenance of field and laboratory equipment;
4. Experience supervising employees;
5. Experience coordinating workshops or similar group activities;
6. Experience in writing grant proposals.

The Successful Candidate Will

1. Have the ability to travel to field sites and work independently;
2. Be willing to travel with Principal Investigator to field sites in USA and other countries to collect biological control agents;
3. Possess excellent organizational and written and verbal communication skills;
4. Have highly effective interpersonal skills including the ability to work cooperatively with research faculty and staff, producers and co-workers;
5. Be able to follow instructions, maintain effective attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing competing demands;
6. Be meticulous and specific in carrying out work assignments.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
  • Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points) as both in-and-out-of-state travel will be required;
  • Occasional international and domestic travel may be required in participating in the exploratory research;
  • Possess a valid Montana Pesticide Applicator License, or be able to obtain one within 6-months of employment;
  • Occasional work outside of traditional business hours when research protocols dictate will be required.
Physical Demands

With or without reasonable accommodation; the person in this position must be able to:

  • Must be able to enter, exit and operate numerous types of farm equipment; requires working around loud, heavy equipment, and occasionally working at elevated positions (grain bins, roofs).
  • Must be able to lift and carry 70 pounds.
  • Must be able to walk and stand in rough terrain for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work with and around pesticides, other plant materials and in dusty environments; requires the ability to wear a respirator or related safety equipment.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions.
