Position Details

General Statement

This position will focus on the development of a field-oriented research program that focuses on tree and small fruit production and crop protection in western Montana. The incumbent will manage the horticulture program for the Western Agricultural Research Center. Duties and Responsibilities

The position is 80% research, 10% teaching, and 10% service. The incumbent is responsible for the development of a field-oriented research program that focuses on tree and small fruit production and crop protection in western Montana. The successful individual will also provide expertise to other research programs in the Department, College and MAES as appropriate. Developing an integrated approach to production and crop protection is expected. The individual is expected to cooperate with other scientists, educators, farmers and related industries, advisory and commodity groups to develop research priorities and actively participate in developing recommendations for management of tree and small fruit. The person in this position will also provide expertise to other research programs in the Department, College, and MAES as appropriate. Securing extramural funds from state, regional and national grant programs as well as the agricultural industry, is required. Opportunities exist to participate in graduate student education. The position is expected to communicate research findings in oral and written formats, including refereed publications. Participation in outreach and service activities is expected.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. A completed Ph.D. in Horticulture or closely related discipline at the time of hire.

2. Demonstrated expertise in production and management of horticultural crops.

3. Demonstrated experience in planning, designing and implementing field research, and interpreting research results using accepted, innovative and strategic scientific methodology.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Documented success in obtaining external grant support.

2. Experience in horticulture, particularly cultivar testing.

3. Experience with production, management, and protection of tree and small fruits under irrigated conditions.

4. Experience in overall management and participation with a research team.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
  • Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points) as both in-and-out-of-state travel will be required.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Montana Government Pesticide Applicator License within six months of hire.

The Department of Research Centers represents a unique organizational unit with 14 faculty and staff that conduct research and outreach programs at seven off-campus research centers throughout Montana.

The region has a significant and developing tree fruit/small fruit and other horticultural crops industry. An advisory board made up of area producers and extension agents has provided guidance in the development of this position and will provide guidance for development of research and extension priorities.
