Position Details

General Statement

The College of Nursing at Montana State University offers a baccalaureate degree, an accelerated second degree option and master’s and doctoral graduate degrees in nursing. The single undergraduate curriculum is located in five locations across the state.

The Department Head/Campus Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the local campus faculty, staff and students, as well as the College of Nursing equipment and leased facilities associated with that campus.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitates communication among University/College administration, faculty and students, and the community.
  • Oversees the implementation of the curriculum on the campus.
  • Interprets and assures adherence to University and College policies on the campus.
  • Orients faculty to the campus/College/University goals, roles, policies and procedures.
  • Makes faculty undergraduate teaching assignments and collaborates with the Associate Dean in finalizing graduate teaching assignments considering areas of expertise/education, needs of curriculum/campus, and individual faculty goals.
  • Supports faculty research agendas.
  • Facilitates positive climate and team building on the Billings site to support the work of faculty and students.
  • Establishes and maintains agency agreements for clinical teaching sites.
  • Coordinates and plans consolidated clinical schedules with other nursing and health related education programs in the community and at some points statewide e.g. psych experiences
  • Assigns academic advisor and oversees advisement. May advise graduate students if committee chair is on another campus Orients to campus, college policies, local resources.
  • Facilitates acknowledgment/recognition of student achievement.
  • Advises, communicates policies, communicates/discusses options with students having academic difficulty or need for variance in curriculum.
  • Coordinates and facilitates ongoing relationships to assure for positive and productive student experiences with community health organizations.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. License or ability to become licensed as a registered nurse in Montana by date of hire.
  2. An earned doctorate from an accredited program in nursing or in a related field.
  3. Demonstrated experience as a nurse educator in a collegiate or university setting.
  4. Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside the department.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Management or leadership experience in nursing education.
  2. Demonstrated experience in academic administration including budgetary, fiscal, and personnel management.
  3. Demonstrated experience in engagement with the community or public relations activities.
  4. Demonstrated experience in motivating and managing faculty, staff, and students.
  5. Demonstrated experience in research or research support.
  6. Demonstrated experience in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and participation in a unit of diverse scholars.
  7. Demonstrated experience with multiple sites and/or distance delivery of education.
  8. Promote the advancement of diversity.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Appointment: Full-time (1.0 FTE) tenure track or non-tenure track; 10 month appointment or length of annual appointment negotiable, academic rank negotiable.

If the position is hired at NTT, this position MAY BE a Union position. Union membership is determined by the amount of work being contracted.

Any position working 50% or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU) Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. The Program

The College of Nursing baccalaureate program includes two years of lower-division study that can be completed at any campus and two years of study at an upper-division campus site (Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls, Kalispell and Missoula). Faculty members are assigned to a campus where they live, work and supervise students in a variety of health care agencies.

The Department

The MSU College of Nursing Billings campus is located in Apsaruke Hall on the MSU-Billings campus. It is the largest MSU College of Nursing site with 160 upper division students and approximately 19 full-time equivalent faculty.

The Montana State University College of Nursing has been educating students for careers in nursing since 1937. It is the oldest state-supported institution offering nursing education in Montana and the only institution in the state offering master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing.
