Brief Position Overview

Although the position is designed to support investigators affiliated with CAIRHE and INBRE, the Rural CRA may assist non-affiliated MSU researchers with the prior approval of the CAIRHE and INBRE principal investigators.

Position Details

General Statement

The Center for American Indian and Rural Health Equity (CAIRHE) and Montana INBRE are in need of a Rural Community Research Associate position for the Community Engagement Core. The Rural Community Research Associate (CRA) will facilitate productive, trusting relationships between MSU researchers and rural, non-tribal communities in Montana according to best practices in community-based participatory research. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Seek, establish, and develop research partnerships as liaison between CAIRHE and INBRE faculty investigators and rural Montana communities interested in community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects.
  • Work with community organizations to identify potential research pilot projects, especially in the health sciences or areas of particular concern to the communities. In conjunction with the CAIRHE and INBRE principal investigators, identify faculty researchers to lead related community-based research projects.
  • Advise and mentor CAIRHE and INBRE investigators on best practices in CBPR and successful project design. Design and deliver training in CBPR and research ethics to investigators.
  • Work directly with CAIRHE and INBRE investigators to introduce them to community stakeholders, assist them in recruiting Community Advisory Boards (CAB) and community research participants specific to their research projects, and help them organize and conduct CAB meetings. Work as a liaison to maintain excellent research relationships among faculty, institutions, and rural communities.
  • Facilitate the dissemination of research progress and results by investigators to partner communities and the development of informed interventions by investigators.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with the Montana Office of Rural Health, the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), MSU Extension, state health agencies, private foundations, and other organizations engaged in rural health in Montana.
  • Contribute to developing grant proposals, both the CAIRHE and INBRE grant renewals, and other proposals involving faculty and community partners.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant education and/or experience.
  2. Demonstrated experience in effectively facilitating community relationships.
  3. Direct knowledge of Montana’s rural communities and Montana’s health care infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Master’s degree or equivalent relevant education and/or experience.
  2. Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple initiatives while working with various constituents, bringing project to a successful completion.
  3. Experience working with Montana’s rural communities, particularly in a health context.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Regular expense-paid travel is required.

Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points).
