Position Details

General Statement

Montana State University Statistical Consulting and Research Services (SCRS) offers statistical consulting to students and faculty at MSU, as well as non-affiliates, depending on consultant availability. We assist in research planning, analysis and dissemination of statistical information.

Reporting to the Director of SCRS, the Assistant Director of Statistical Consulting will provide general and advanced statistical and methodological consulting services, conduct instructional workshops and trainings, manage clients and projects, supervise and mentor graduate students, and assist the Director in facilitating the growth and sustainability of SCRS. This position is part time (approximately 24 hours per week) and grant funded. Contract renewal is dependent on successful performance and continuation of funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

As the Assistant Director of Statistical Consulting, the position will provide backup to the Director for Statistical Consulting and research support for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and staff doing research. This includes providing general and advanced statistical and methodological consulting related to study design, pilot data analysis, grant proposal preparation, data analysis, and interpretation of results. This position may also conduct instructional workshops and other training’s by request. Initially, due to the funding source, consultations will primarily be focused on survey and intervention research in social and behavioral sciences. The assistant director will be also expected to efficiently manage clients and projects, and facilitate growth for future sustainability of the center. This may involve hiring, managing, and mentoring graduate students and/or other supporting personnel and seeking opportunities for funding of the services. Finally, it will be expected that the assistant director work closely with the director and an advisory council to develop goals and directions for the future. Work plans agreed upon by the assistant director, director and advisory council will be used as a basis for annual evaluations, which will be conducted by the head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Master’s degree in Statistics or related field or an equivalent combination of education, coursework, and/or experience
  2. At least one year of statistical consulting experience.
  3. At least one year of experience analyzing data, including fitting sophisticated models, using SAS or R.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. One or more year(s) of experience mentoring, managing, or coaching junior statistical consultants.
  2. Three or more years of experience as a statistical consultant in an academic or research setting as a member of a team of statistical consultants, including experience producing publications appearing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  3. Experience managing a spending plan for an operation with at least five part-time employees.
