Position Details

General Statement

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Montana State University seeks qualified Spanish teachers for a candidate pool. This announcement does not necessarily indicate that we have any openings at the moment. Local candidates who may be available and willing to teach Spanish courses on a part-time basis should the need arise are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted on a continual basis and will be maintained in a pool for two years.

After two years, candidates may re-submit materials for continued consideration.

When an opening occurs, the department hiring authority will review and evaluate the application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure-track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and may vary in duration, but typically a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department or program. Salary is dependent on the number of courses taught and duration.

Duties and Responsibilities

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

A Bachelor’s degree in Spanish or equivalent degree from a foreign university and successful teaching experience required.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Master’s or equivalent & college teaching experience preferred.

The Successful Candidate Will

Have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate successfully and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

This position MAY BE a Union position. Union membership is determined by the amount of work being contracted.

Any position working 50% or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment. Additional information can be found at AFMSU.org.

Any position working less than 50% is not represented by the Union, and is not required to pay dues. If the terms and conditions of the hire contracts change, the representational status of this position could be impacted.

The Program
The Department

Modern Languages & Literatures offers B.A. Degrees in French & Francophone Studies, German Studies, and Hispanic Studies. Teaching options in French, German, and Spanish are offered, as well as Teaching and Non-Teaching Minors in French, German, and Spanish. The Department offers both an option and a minor in two joint programs in conjunction with the Department of History and Philosophy: Japan Studies and Latin American and Latino Studies. In addition, the China Studies minor combines the study of language, history, and culture in China. The Department also offers courses in Arabic in cooperation with the Office of International Programs via the US Arabic Distance Learning Network.


The faculty is comprised of ten Tenure-Track members and an equal number of non-Tenure-Track instructors.
