Position Details

General Statement

This position is located at Fort Keogh in Miles City, MT. The primary purpose of the Research Laboratory is to conduct research in the scientific fields of range management, nutrition, animal genetics, and reproductive physiology and to advance range productivity and beef cattle production in the Northern Great Plains. This Agricultural Experiment Station is operated jointly by USDA-ARS and Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

The person in this position’s main responsibility is to produce necessary forage to support the livestock used in research at the laboratory, and to participate with agronomic research as appropriate. This position will supervise two full-time employees and as many as four part-time temporary employees. Supervisory responsibilities include day-to-day oversight of employees, planning work schedules, supervising and training them in their work, and completing their performance evaluations. It is expected that all duties of this position will be completed in a professional and dedicated manner.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Two years’ experience in farming and/or ranching.
  2. Demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining various farm equipment, vehicles, and implements.
  3. Demonstrated experience in inspecting, repairing, and fabricating machinery using welders, torches, hand, and power tools.
  4. Knowledge of farming techniques and crop rotations.
  5. Knowledge of workplace safety practices and providing safety trainings to others.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Relevant post-secondary education and/or other applicable specialized training desired.
  2. Computer skills in the areas of Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

1. Must be able to work varied hours to include evenings and weekends.
2. Must possess (or have the ability to obtain) a current State of Montana Driver’s License and possess an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points).
3. Must possess(or have the ability to obtain)a Montana Certified Pesticide Applicator’s License within six months of hire date.

Physical Demands
