Position Details

General Statement

Culinary Services (CS), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals for over 12,000 customers a day becoming an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CS proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, 9 retail operations, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery & Salads, and the Farm to Campus Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Production Cook and Lead Cook duties include:

  • Actively preparing food while consistently keeping in mind quality and presentation
  • Excellence in customer service
  • Recipe testing
  • Directing work the work of production staff (training and coaching)
  • Accurate record keeping and monitoring of inventory
  • Proper food handling and sanitation techniques


Production Cooks assist area supervisors with directing and training staff.

Lead Cooks are responsible for efficiently run venues; are the lead worker at each venue; and are the primary trainer and area supervisor.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Progressive experience working in a high volume restaurant or institutional food service or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Lead worker experience.

Experience providing excellent customer service.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Experience with inventory control.

Experience with recipe testing and development.

Multiple shifts are available.

Eligible for overtime. Will be asked to work evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and holidays dependent on school schedule and shift.

Shifts may change dependent on departmental need.

12 month and 10 month/academic year positions available.

Physical Demands

Normal kitchen environment inclusive of:

  • Standing and/or moving about for long periods of time.
  • Walking up and down stairs while carrying product.
  • Moving and lifting containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Bending and/or kneeling while stocking product.
  • Gripping handles on small kitchen utensils.
  • Performing repetitive motions such as, but not limited to, chopping, stirring and serving
  • Will have exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to work in an environment where temperatures can range from over 90F to -10F.
