Brief Position Overview

The Systems Administrator for Research Cyberinfrastructure will deploy, administer, and update large-scale research systems, related infrastructure services, grid software stacks, and operating systems. The position will be responsible for components of Montana State’s computational research environment (http://www.montana.edu/uit/rci/hyalite/), and will work closely with researchers, systems administrators, and developers throughout the University and partner institutions. Consults with multiple IT colleagues, external research groups, and grant-funded initiatives (http://www.montana.edu/uit/bridger/). Administers existing individual and cluster infrastructure technologies, and researches/prototypes new systems and technologies. Participates in national computing activities by attending workshops, conferences, and potentially presenting research. The person in this position may work extended hours as required, when core systems are down. The system administrator in this position will be on-call periodically and could be required to respond to emergency situations at all hours of the day and night.

Position Details

General Statement

The System Administrator for Research Cyberinfrastructure is responsible for the technical implementation and maintenance of Montana State University’s Research Cyberinfrastructure computing environment and related infrastructure services.

This position reports to the Lead System Administrator for Research Cyberinfrastructure within University Information Technology (UIT), providing central research technology services to Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

System Administration & Development

  • Administer, design, and deploy infrastructure, middleware, and software to support Montana State University’s production research computing cyberinfrastructure.
  • Design and prototype new systems, and write technical proposals/reports for possible implementation.
  • Develop programs, tools, and system automation for the University’s individual and cluster research systems, including software deployment, compilation and installation of modules, and systems management frameworks.
  • Utilize creativity and innovation to solve problems raised by usage of cutting edge research and technology as it relates to scientific exploration.
  • Configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Research, configure, implement and manage ongoing operations of Enterprise

COLLABORATION

  • Work collaboratively with UIT staff, faculty, and IT staff from other institutions to research and implement high-performance cluster or distributed computing technologies.
  • Collaborate with staff at partner institutions to deploy and maintain research computing technologies.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on the Bozeman campus to develop and deploy cutting-edge technology, supporting scientific exploration; participate in writing grants and articles for publication
  • Coordinate with UIT to maximize performance and utilization of research cyberinfrastructure.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT & DOCUMENTATION

  • Provide guidance to IT colleagues, interfacing new computational technologies with existing systems, commercial software, and operational policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Combination of education and/or applicable experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or other related field and/or advanced experience working with Linux and related infrastructure services in an enterprise production environment.
  2. Experience with Linux operating system administration and automation supporting scientific or research computing environment.; TCP/IP networking, system troubleshooting, and performance tuning.; security concepts including firewall and server hardening configurations; familiarity with modern large-scale scientific computing systems including: system design with extensive understanding of software architecture and abstraction patterns.
  3. Experience with programming in at least C/C++, Perl, Python, Ruby, or Bash.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted.
  2. Experience working on technical proposals and supporting and leading active research projects.
  3. Understanding of High Performance Computing (HPC) applications or workflows, types of scientific computing and relevant benchmarks.
  4. Experience with grid, job scheduling, and/or support software (e.g., PBS, Condor, Torque, Globus)
  5. Familiarity with high-performance interconnects (e.g., RDMA, high-speed ethernet), high performance storage, and/or distributed storage systems.
  6. Familiarity with data intensive research networking, including perfSonar, ScienceDMZ, GridFTP, etc.
