Brief Position Overview

This position is an integral part of Montana State University’s Network Services team. As one of the technical network analysts this position has primary responsibility for telephony services. Responsibilities include installation, integration, administration, and day to day support of the MSU telephony and data network systems. This includes on-going support for the existing legacy Avaya PBX and Aura Messaging system as well as assisting in the design and planning for future IP-based telephony and unified communication services.

Position Details

General Statement

In support of the Montana State University mission, University Information Technology promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of information technology services and resources.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide customer service to a wide range of constituents with varying knowledge levels by troubleshooting, analyzing, diagnosing, and resolving complex user technical problems.
  • Support and administrate the MSU telephony system in its current and future technology.
  • Assist in development of road-maps, strategic plans and the individual project plans required to meet the goals of the University and Information Technology.
  • Provide technical leadership of projects when assigned.
  • Along with Networking Services team members, provide support as needed for projects, critical system outages, or system maintenance during maintenance windows, during both regular and non-business hours.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience.
  2. Demonstrated experience in an enterprise environment supporting either an enterprise network or telephony system (or both).
  3. Demonstrated experience in Cisco networking, Avaya telephony, VOIP, Unified Communications or combination of these in an enterprise setting.
  4. Demonstrated experience in being technical lead on projects, working independently on enterprise systems, assisting in enterprise and project planning.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Demonstrated experience in IT serving a mid- to large-sized organization in multiple IT specializations.
  2. Demonstrated experience in an enterprise environment deploying network equipment all of the Cisco networking layers.
  3. Demonstrated experience in leading telephony or networking projects at the enterprise level.
  4. Demonstrated experience in an enterprise environment, deploying either legacy telephony infrastructure (POTS/analog) or modern telephony infrastructure (VOIP, Unified Communications).
The Successful Candidate Will
  • Work effectively and cooperate with all university IT staff in a team oriented and collaborative environment.
  • Follow detailed procedures and document steps in detail.
  • Help to update and develop written system documentation and procedures in the telephony and networking areas.
  • Assist in the merging of the UIT network and telephony areas.
  • Technically lead the next generation of telephony/unified communications at MSU.
  • Represent the department and university to others in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Possess the ability to work a flexible schedule to facilitate the critical work of the University IT mission.
