Brief Position Overview

The Athletic Academic Coordinator & Student-Athlete Affairs Administrator will create a comprehensive and strategic program that provides student-athletes with tangible skills required to be lifelong leaders. This position will promote academic achievement, graduation and personal growth of each student-athlete. In addition, the Athletic Academic Coordinator and Student-Athlete Affairs Administrator will provide academic counseling in conjunction with faculty academic advisors to ensure student-athletes meet NCAA and Big Sky Conference eligibility requirements and progress towards degree requirements.

Position Details

General Statement

The Athletic Academic Coordinator/Student-Athlete Affairs Administrator must work closely with the coaches, student-athletes, Registrar, Faculty Athletic Representative, and faculty advisors to ensure not only that the students are on track to graduate but that they are also meeting NCAA and Big Sky Conference eligibility requirements. Effectively advising the student-athletes is paramount to the department’s mission of providing a quality education, assisting the students in graduating, and providing for a competitive athletic environment.

This position works closely with the Faculty Athletic Representative, Registrar, Admissions, Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Academic Services and Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Student and Compliance Services/SWA to ensure incoming student-athletes meet applicable NCAA requirements for financial aid, practice, and competition.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Athletic Academic Coordinator/Student- Athlete Affairs Administrator include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinate the student-athlete progress toward receiving a degree working with the student-athlete’s academic advisor, academic department, Registrar’s Office, FAR, and the student-athlete.
  • Oversee academic eligibility for each student-athlete on teams as assigned, including managing, tracking and predicting APR for assigned teams, as well as regular meetings with coaches on academics.
  • Work closely with potential student-athletes (high school & transfers) to assess eligibility for competition, financial aid, and practice.
  • Coordinate any eligibility waivers for continuing and incoming student-athletes for teams assigned.
  • Oversee the entire Student-Athlete Affairs Program including, but not limited to, coordination of the ALL Program and Student-Athlete Advisor Committee (organization/attend regularly scheduled meetings).
  • Monitor and counsel student-athletes as assigned in the CATS Program.
  • Manage Athletic Academic Awards Programs/Committee.
  • Coordinate exit interviews for student-athletes who leave the athletic program prior to exhausting eligibility.
  • Teach any athletics specific classes as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Academic Services.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Academic Services, Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Student and Compliance Services/SWA and/or the Director of Athletics.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable skills are acquired.
  2. Demonstrated experience in athletics administration or higher education.
  3. Demonstrated experience and competence in advising and/or student success in a higher-ed setting.
  4. Demonstrated experience in establishing and monitoring policies and practices related to academic success.
  5. Experience working with and engaging diverse students.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Masters in a related field.
  2. Demonstrated experience interacting with a diverse constituency using excellent interpersonal communications skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to implement and run a departmentwide Student-Athlete Affairs Program and SAAC Committee.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to NCAA and Big Sky conference bylaws.
  5. Demonstrated experience and competence in applying NCAA rules and regulations of PTD to student-athlete academic plans.
  6. Experience with MSU’s SCT Banner software system, and experience w/NCAA Computer Assistant and Legislative Services Database internet.
