Position Details

General Statement

The Communications Specialist will support the research and outreach mission of the MSU Initiative for Regulation and Applied Economic Analysis. Under the direction of the initiative’s co-directors, the communications specialist will handle a variety of the initiative’s communications, outreach, and technical writing/editing in support of its research and educational programs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitating the dissemination of research findings to a variety of public audiences and via a variety of methods.
  • Writing and developing communications and educational materials related to the Initiative’s research programs, including writing careful technical and non-technical research summaries and research presentations that are accessible to a wide array of audiences.
  • Creating promotional and informational materials for the initiative’s conferences, workshops, and other outreach activities, including generating content and graphic design for these materials.
  • Development, maintenance, and continual improvement of the Initiative’s website.
  • Editing technical documents.
  • With guidance by the Initiative’s Co-Directors and other researchers, providing research, writing, and editorial support the research programs and projects of initiative-sponsored research fellows and grantees conducting research on policy, regulations, and regulatory initiatives in the agricultural, healthcare, technology, finance, natural resources, education, public safety, and other sectors of the Montana and U.S. economy.
  • Working with other Initiative staff to provide logistical and administrative support for the initiative’s conferences, workshops, and other outreach activities.
  • Write articles and pieces for publication in newspapers, journals, online, etc.
  • This position is also responsible for working with University Communications to keep all communications materials within the university’s branding standards. This position will consult with and seek approval from University Communications before creating any new brand identity. Additionally, this position will use the university’s Content Management System for any web applications.
  • The position will consult with and seek guidance from University Communications on any issues dealing with the media – newspapers, tv stations, etc., — as well any social media plan before implementation.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications or economics or closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Demonstrated excellent writing and editing skills, including skills in both technical writing and writing for general audiences.
  3. Experience developing, managing, and enhancing websites using Content Management Systems.
  4. Demonstrated ability to translate technical research into communications that are accessible to non-specialists.
  5. Proficiency using MS Office software including Word, Power Point, and Outlook.
  6. Understanding of basic economic concepts and applied economics research methods.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Demonstrated experience in independent project management.
  2. Demonstrated exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  3. Degree in economics or other policy-related discipline, and/or demonstrated experience assisting with economic or other applied policy analysis and research.
  4. Knowledge of MUS and MSU policies and procedures regarding communications and outreach activities.
  5. Knowledge and experience in support of research grant writing.

  • Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Have aptitude for working with a wide variety of constituencies.
  • Have the ability to work independently and proactively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Have the ability to track down answers or solutions with relatively little guidance.
