Brief Position Overview

The Teaching and Learning Technologies Manager will manage and support the personnel and services involved in the analysis, selection, deployment and assessment of instructional technology for both on-campus and online instruction; exam scoring and course evaluation software and services; and UIT Student Labs. The Manager will supervise, direct, and mentor staff; have experience and understand the instructional technology needs of a growing, complex research institution, and have knowledge and skills related to new technologies, trends, and pedagogical practices.

Position Details

General Statement

The MSU Teaching and Learning Technologies Manager is responsible for recommending, designing, implementing, and assessing technology to support the instructional and outreach mission of the university. The unit works closely with faculty and students to improve instruction through the use of technology and to deploy technology in existing classroom spaces as well as new construction and online delivery. This unit represents UIT on a variety of campus-wide advisory committees.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide operational management of an instructional technology services team focused on the institution’s Learning Management System (currently Desire2Learn), classroom technologies and infrastructures, student labs, and instructional exam scoring and evaluations.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate successful instructional technology services planning and projects.
  • Provide strategic planning and input related to the design, development, and deployment of instructional technology.
  • In collaboration with appropriate stakeholders, establish and execute formalized evaluation approaches for current and pilot technologies and tools.
  • Act as knowledge resource for information about current trends and use of technology in teaching and learning; disseminate best practices information appropriately to staff, committees, and campus units.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Post-secondary education in educational technology or related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
  2. Demonstrated experience managing information technology units and staff with a focus on instructional technologies
  3. Demonstrated experience with and broad knowledge of instructional technology software, infrastructure, and pedagogical practices
  4. Demonstrated experience with information systems security threats and mitigation.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Advanced degree in computer science, technology/instructional technology, science, engineering, math, or related field
  2. Demonstrated experience in higher education leadership at a large, complex research institution.

  • Manage and develop staff skills that will allow the independent design, development, and management of instructional technology services of a highly technical nature
  • Make decisions that impact institutional performance with confidence, agility, and competence
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, staff, and other institutional units to assess, evaluate, and implement instructional technology tools and plans
  • Work influentially within the culture and governing structure of a higher education institution, including working interdependently with stakeholders across the enterprise and across a wide range of skills and authority
Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Work requires some travel to visit other campuses within the Montana University System.
