Position Details

General Statement

Culinary Services (CS), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals for over 12,000 customers a day becoming an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CS proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, 9 retail operations, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery & Salads, and the Farm to Campus Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the management staff, Baker I’s actively produce baked goods with duties including:

  • Production of cakes and cookies and other desserts, scaling, mixing, handling
  • Proofing and baking of all cake and raised donut products, sweet dough and danish
  • Making of muffins, turnovers, and pastries
  • Production of scratch bagels
  • Operating large scale and specialty bakery equipment
  • General cleaning of bakery equipment
  • Instruction and oversight of student employees
  • Interacting with the Health Inspector to ensure all sanitation guidelines are being followed
  • And contributing to the success of the department as an active member of the team while performing other duties as needed in support of the department’s mission.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Experience in the institutional or commercial food service industries or related culinary education and/or experience.

Experience operating commercial bakery equipment and/or other food service equipment.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Eligible for overtime. Will be asked to work evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and holidays dependent on school schedule and shift.

Full time, 10 month position. Shifts available are:

  • 5pm – 1:30am Sunday – Thursday
  • 8am – 4:30pm Tuesday – Thursday, 7am – 3:30pm Friday and 7am – 2:30pm Saturday

Shifts may change dependent on departmental need.

Bakers may be asked to focus on certain areas of production: dessert and breakfast production, bread production, bagels and pizza dough, and packaging.

Physical Demands

Normal bakery environment inclusive of:

  • Standing for long periods of time.
  • Walking up and down stairs while carrying product.
  • Moving and lifting containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Bending and/or kneeling while stocking product.
  • Gripping handles on small kitchen utensils.
  • Performing repetitive motions such as, but not limited to, chopping, stirring and serving
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
  • Work in an environment where temperatures can range from over 90F to -10F.
